Ukrainian orchestra to play for “Ashura” puppet show

Gharibpur said that since he wants to use poems composed by Iranian poets Mohtasham Kashani in the opera, these parts should be sung by an Iranian vocalist in Iran.

Ashura is the tenth of the month of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic year, and marks the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and a number of his followers.

Gharbipur previously announced that the puppet opera would be a blend of music, puppetry, poetry, and tazieh (a form of Iranian passion play).

“Iranians always thinks that tazieh is only known and appreciated in Iran but many foreign artists are interested in this kind of play,” he added.

He went on to say that he has performed a three puppet opera, “Rustam and Sohrab” a national work, “Macbeth” an international play and “Ashura” which is a religious-themed one.

Ali Pakdast will begin making the puppets on August 22 at the Ferdowsi Hall of Rudaki Foundation. The puppets of Moavieh, Shimr ibn Dhil-Jawshan and Ibn Sa’d are finished by now and the 25-member troupe will be assigned in near future, he concluded.

The Ashura opera puppet show will be staged at the Ferdowsi Hall in January concurrently with the month of Muharram.
